Lookup Grundy County Court Records

Grundy County Court records in Tennessee are split between the county trial courts, the Chancery Court, the General Sessions Court, and several statewide record systems. A Grundy County Court case search usually starts with the county court portal, then moves to the right clerk when a certified copy, older file, probate matter, divorce decree, warrant status, or traffic disposition is needed. Records are local to Altamont, but appeals, driver records, inmate status, and federal cases may require a state or federal source.

Grundy County Court System

Grundy County is part of Tennessee's 12th Judicial District with Bledsoe, Franklin, Marion, Rhea, and Sequatchie counties. The main trial court is the Circuit Court, not a District Court. Chancery Court sits alongside Circuit Court as a court of record for equity matters, divorce, probate, name changes, conservatorships, guardianships, and delinquent-tax sales. General Sessions Court handles many lower-level civil, criminal, warrant, traffic, and preliminary-hearing matters. Juvenile Court handles youth cases and related family matters that are largely confidential.

A common access mistake is to treat every record as a Circuit Court file. The Circuit Court Clerk, Penny (Smartt) Sons, keeps Circuit, General Sessions, Juvenile, misdemeanor, felony, traffic, and order-of-protection files. The Clerk and Master, Patricia Campbell, keeps Chancery records, including probate and many divorce files. The County Clerk, Tammy Sholey, handles marriage licenses, business licenses, and vehicle records, but not court case files.

Grundy County Court Record Types

Court records in Grundy County include civil complaints, criminal case files, traffic citations, General Sessions warrants, orders of protection, judgments, garnishments, appeals, probate files, divorce files, name-change petitions, and Chancery tax-sale matters. Some records stay online only for more recent years. Older records, especially pre-modern Chancery and probate material, may require the clerk's paper index or Tennessee State Library and Archives microfilm.

Criminal records are not the same as arrest records. An arrest or booking starts at law enforcement and the jail. A criminal court record begins when charges are filed and a case opens. The court file may show arraignment, motions, plea, trial, disposition, judgment, and sentence. Traffic records are also split: the General Sessions court file shows the citation case, while the Tennessee driver record shows license status, points, suspensions, and reported convictions.

  • Civil records: complaints, answers, motions, judgments, garnishments, and appeals.
  • Criminal records: charging instruments, pleas, motions, dispositions, judgments, and sentence details.
  • Traffic records: citations, court dates, fines, costs, dispositions, and failure-to-appear actions.
  • Probate records: wills, estate files, letters, inventories, creditor notices, guardianships, and conservatorships.
  • Family records: divorces and custody orders, with adoption and some juvenile material sealed by law.

Grundy County Public Records Law

Public access to Grundy County court records is governed by the Tennessee Public Records Act and Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 34. Under T.C.A. section 10-7-503, state and local records are open to Tennessee citizens unless a law makes them confidential. A custodian must respond promptly, and within seven business days must produce the record, deny it in writing with the legal basis, or state the time needed to respond.

Rule 34 applies that open-records framework to court records. Inspection is generally free, while copies and certified copies carry fees. A public office may require proof of Tennessee citizenship for a public-records request. It cannot require a reason for the request. Juvenile records, sealed files, expunged matters, adoption records, mental-health proceedings, and private identifiers such as Social Security numbers are handled differently.

Key Statutes:

Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 34 treats court records as open unless a rule, statute, or order restricts access.

T.C.A. section 37-1-153 makes most juvenile court files confidential.

T.C.A. section 40-32-101 controls many expunctions after dismissal, acquittal, diversion, or eligible conviction.

Grundy County Record Fees

Grundy County clerks do not publish a full local fee sheet online, so exact totals should be confirmed before a mail request. Tennessee clerk materials support a plain copy charge of up to 50 cents per page and a $5 certification and seal fee for certified copies. Divorce filing costs in the state statute are $125 without minor children and $200 with minor children, before other taxes, service costs, or local additions.

ItemAmount or Rule

Certified copy seal$5 per document under T.C.A. section 8-21-401
Marriage license$100, or $40 with an approved premarital course certificate

The TNCrtInfo statewide information portal describes the vendor platform that supports Grundy County online court access.

Because local copy and subscription terms were not fully published, the clerk remains the final source for what must be paid before a document is released.

Grundy County Inmate Records

The Grundy County Sheriff's Office is at 227 Maple Street in Altamont. Sheriff Heath Gunter is listed in the county officials directory, and the main sheriff and jail phone number is 931-692-3466. The official sheriff website refused connections during research, so no official online jail roster, visitation calendar, mail rule, commissary vendor, or inmate-search page could be verified. The reliable local custody check is the sheriff and jail line.

For sentenced state felons, use the Tennessee Department of Correction Felony Offender Information Lookup. FOIL is not a county jail roster and will not list every pretrial detainee in Altamont. VINELink and TN SAVIN provide custody notifications. The Grundy County Sheriff's Office mobile app exists on Apple and Google stores, but the research found it to be a tips and public-safety news app, not an inmate lookup or warrant-search tool.

Grundy County Warrant Records

Warrant access in Grundy County is a fallback-chain task. No official online active-warrant search was confirmed. Arrest warrants, bench warrants, capias warrants, and probation-related warrants may appear through court case status or be confirmed through the Circuit Court Clerk, the General Sessions docket line, or the Sheriff's Office. A traffic failure to appear can also trigger license suspension through the Department of Safety until the court matter is cleared.

For criminal cases, the 12th Judicial District Attorney General prosecutes felony and misdemeanor matters across the district. The 12th Judicial District Attorney General page identifies the district office and victim services context.

The district office context helps explain why charges filed after arrest may be handled outside a single county department even though the case is heard in Altamont.

Grundy County Marriage and Probate

Marriage records begin with the County Clerk, not a court clerk. Couples may use the Tennessee County Clerk online pre-application for Grundy County, but both applicants still appear in person to finish the license. The license must be used within 30 days. The standard fee is $100, reduced to $40 when the couple presents a valid premarital preparation course certificate.

Divorce and probate are court matters. Divorce can be filed in Chancery or Circuit Court because Tennessee gives those courts concurrent jurisdiction. Probate in Grundy County is confirmed as a Chancery Court function administered by the Clerk and Master. That office handles wills, estate administration, small estates, conservatorships, guardianships, and related Chancery files dating back to 1850.

Grundy County Court Dockets

Dockets are schedules and event logs. They are not the full case file. A docket can show the case number, parties, hearing date, judge, charge or case type, filed motions, continuances, orders, and disposition entries. The Circuit Court Clerk's docket and scheduling line is 931-692-2414. The 12th Judicial District Public Defender also publishes Grundy court information for defendants and appointed-counsel matters.

Grundy County Court History

Grundy County was created in 1844 from Warren and Coffee counties and was named for Felix Grundy. Altamont has served as the county seat since the county's early years. The present courthouse was completed in 1996 after the prior courthouse was destroyed by arson in 1990. Earlier fires and disasters matter for record access because the Tennessee State Library and Archives notes lost Grundy records, including early marriage records from 1844 through 1849.

The Grundy County government homepage is the official entry point for county departments and court-fee payment links.

For older files, the county office, TSLA microfilm, and surviving indexes may all be needed because modern online coverage does not reach the county's earliest records.

Grundy County Federal Records

Federal cases from Grundy County are separate from county court records. Grundy is in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, Winchester Division. Federal civil-rights, federal criminal, bankruptcy, habeas, and diversity cases are searched through PACER or the federal court clerk. Bankruptcy cases for the Eastern District of Tennessee are handled through the federal bankruptcy court, with Chattanooga serving the area.

The Tennessee appellate courts also have a separate public case-history search for the Tennessee Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and Court of Criminal Appeals. It does not replace the Grundy trial-court portal. Use it only when a local case has been appealed.

The statewide TNCrtInfo master search can search participating county court offices, including locations on that platform.

That multi-county tool is helpful for district-wide searches, but federal and appellate records still require their own systems.
